Taking policy decisions for any reason other than a country’s national interest — seen in the context of comprehensive national power and its enhancement — is never an option. And in the interest of the country’s energy security, bowing to foreign pressure would be nothing short of a travesty. It is in this context that New Delhi’s decision about whether to buy oil from Iran or not — in the face of increasing pressure from the US — needs to be seen.
